A Chronicle of a Fabricated Reality<\/h4>\n

Something changed in the last regional elections in Spain. It wasn\u2019t just a shift in government or a surprise at the polls. It was something else\u2014more invisible, more unsettling. For the first time, Artificial Intelligence left the labs and expert talks and fully entered the electoral campaign. Not through speeches, but through deception.<\/p>\n

RTVE, La Vanguardia, and other media outlets documented it in detail: massive disinformation campaigns emerged that didn\u2019t seem created by humans\u2014because they weren\u2019t. These were machine-generated products, trained to manipulate emotions. Fake videos with convincing faces. Audio recordings mimicking politicians' voices. Texts crafted down to the comma to spark outrage, fear, and division.<\/p>\n

These weren\u2019t mere hoaxes. They were something else: a surgical-scale operation. A kind of confusion factory. And it worked. Because when lies cost less than truth, lies gain ground.<\/p>\n

The goal wasn\u2019t to make people believe a specific false story. The objective was more insidious: to seed doubt about everything. To make people question what they see. To make them distrust their own certainties. A manipulated video doesn\u2019t aim to convince\u2014it aims to wear you down. To confuse you so deeply that you end up believing nothing.<\/p>\n \n

We\u2019re Not Being Deceived\u2014We\u2019re Being Used<\/h4>\n

How is this possible? Because the attack doesn\u2019t target our logic. It targets something more primitive: our impulses. The human brain is filled with shortcuts\u2014cognitive biases\u2014that make us far more vulnerable than we like to admit.<\/p>\n

When you see a video that makes you angry or outraged, you share it instantly. That\u2019s exactly what they want\u2014not for you to think, but to react. To turn you into an unwitting accomplice in the manipulation.<\/p>\n

A recent study found that only 54% of Spaniards feel capable of detecting fake news. That leaves half the population exposed. The danger isn\u2019t just being deceived. The danger is becoming accustomed to deception. To accepting noise as the new normal. To mistaking information overload for understanding.<\/p>\n \n

Technology Doesn\u2019t Vote\u2014But It Decides<\/h4>\n

This is not about demonizing AI. It\u2019s not a monster with a political agenda. It\u2019s a tool. A powerful one, yes\u2014but still just a tool. The issue is not the technology itself, but the strategy behind its use.<\/p>\n

Some political parties\u2014not all\u2014have realized that the real electoral battlefield is no longer on debate stages. It\u2019s on your phone. In WhatsApp groups. In forums. In comment sections that look spontaneous but are orchestrated. Elections are now won in seconds\u2014by manipulating emotions, not ideas.<\/p>\n

The result? A disoriented, more polarized, more exhausted electorate. And in the long run, that doesn\u2019t just erode politics\u2014it erodes democracy.<\/p>\n \n

What Now?<\/h4>\n

Yes, there are responses. Some come from governments: laws like the DEEPFAKES Accountability Act in the U.S., or Europe\u2019s regulatory frameworks on algorithmic transparency. Others come from tech companies trying to build detection tools. But let\u2019s be honest: we\u2019re always one step behind. For every filter, there\u2019s already a new AI model capable of bypassing it.<\/p>\n

The real solution isn\u2019t technical. It\u2019s human. It\u2019s called critical thinking. It\u2019s called media literacy. It\u2019s about teaching\u2014and learning\u2014how to question well. How to verify. How to ask uncomfortable questions. How not to accept everything we see just because it feels good or comes from someone with a lot of followers.\n\nAs a recent international declaration in North Macedonia stated: the best defense against digital manipulation is an informed and lucid citizenry. And that doesn\u2019t happen overnight. It must be built.<\/p>\n \n

EPILOGUE\nIt\u2019s Not AI. It\u2019s Us.<\/h4>\n

We live in an age where quantity of information is no longer the problem\u2014quality is. And above all, our ability to interpret it. AI isn\u2019t going away. On the contrary, it will become more present every day. The question is not whether we can avoid it. The question is whether we are prepared to coexist with it without losing our ability to discern.\n\nBecause ultimately, the greatest battle is not technological. It\u2019s mental. It\u2019s cultural. It\u2019s strategic.<\/p>\n\n <\/article>\n\n
